Andrew runs Detail Roofing with his business partner Robyn. They do metal roof replacements across Southeast Queensland, predominantly insurance work. Not long ago, that meant Andrew running around in his own ute, chasing jobs one at a time, just about keeping busy enough to cover rent and not much else.
He wasn't short on skill. He was short on two things every trade business needs to actually grow: a steady flow of new work, and the people to deliver it once it lands.
The First Problem: Getting Found
Southeast Queensland's roofing market is a hard one. There's a genuine trade shortage across the industry, and the few operators in roofing specifically tend to come with their own baggage, availability, quality, reliability. Being good at the work isn't enough if the market can't find you.
That's where Increase Construction came in, and deliberately in that order. Rather than asking Andrew to spend money upfront and hope it worked, the first move was aligning Detail Roofing with new business, proving the value before asking for anything. That's the kind of thing that builds confidence you're dealing with someone who actually knows what they're doing, not just someone selling a service.
It worked. Detail Roofing's presentation, how the work gets packaged up for the end client, whether that's an insurance builder or a homeowner, is genuinely strong. But solving the lead flow problem immediately created the next one.
The Second Problem: Delivering the Work
Once the jobs started coming in, Andrew hit the wall every growing trade business hits: how do you actually get the work done without being the only one doing it?
This is the harder part of the Southeast Queensland market. Finding good people is difficult everywhere in construction right now, but roofing narrows the pool even further. Detail Roofing needed a way to grow crews without gambling on whoever was available that week.
What Changed
Two things shifted for Detail Roofing once the systems were in place.
The first was confidence in growth without needing a much bigger back office to support it. Andrew and Robyn didn't want to solve growth by drowning the business in admin and paperwork. Automation took care of a lot of what would otherwise demand more back-office staff, freeing them up to focus on the roofs, not the admin.
The second, and the one Andrew is most direct about, is the shift in who's chasing whom for work. Detail Roofing now gets what Andrew calls "a stupid amount of interest" from people wanting to come work for them. That's a real turnaround from a market where, as he puts it, you'd think there were twenty million roofers in Australia and somehow still couldn't find one.
That interest changes how the business gets run day to day. When you're not desperate for bodies, you can run the business like a business rather than what Andrew calls a "daycare facility." If someone's underperforming, you can have the harder conversation, because you're not terrified of what happens if they walk. A rising tide floats all boats, and keeping someone who's dragging the standard down eventually becomes a culture problem, not just a performance one.
The Result
Detail Roofing went from one person in a ute, keeping busy but not building anything, to a business with consistent lead flow, a team that wants to be there, and enough control over day-to-day operations to actually enforce standards instead of just hoping for the best.
None of it happened by accident, and none of it happened in the order most trade businesses assume. New business first, to prove the value and build confidence. Then the systems, recruitment, and automation to make sure the business could actually deliver once the work showed up.
